When Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 at the Nintendo Direct 2025 event on April 2, 2025, almost all its specs were revealed the next day at the event. The spec sheet tells us that the Nintendo Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, but is that enough? If you consider modern games like Cyberpunk 2077, which requires around 90GB of storage space on PS5, then you can see how easily the 256GB storage can fill up. Besides, you don’t even get the full 256GB, because a portion of it is reserved for the system software.

In this article, we will discuss the Switch 2’s limited internal storage, how it could affect gamers, and how you can expand it.

Here’s everything you need to know about the storage capacity of the Nintendo Switch 2:

Storage Capacity

According to the specs provided by the official Nintendo website, the Switch 2 indeed has 256GB of internal storage. However, 7GB of space is reserved for the system software that runs the entire Switch 2 in the background. Therefore, you will be left with only 249GB of free space, which is not much for modern AAA titles.

Storage Space Used by Games

Modern games like Cyberpunk 2077 (90GB on PS5), Final Fantasy VII Remake (82GB on PS5), and Elden Ring (45GB on PS5) would fill up the Switch 2’s storage by 88%, leaving little to no room for another game or movies. Therefore, you should refrain from installing multiple such games at the same time. However, if you install traditional Nintendo games, then your storage shouldn’t fill up that much.

How To Expand Nintendo Switch 2’s Storage

You can expand the storage of the Nintendo Switch 2 by getting a microSD card. However, it has to be a special microSD called a microSD Express card. They are a bit expensive but much faster than traditional SD cards, which is exactly what the Switch 2 requires for a faster game installation process.
