Firstly, it looks like Apple is completely revamping the software naming scheme. With the new WWDC 2025 event, the biggest change that Apple could announce is they are no longer naming their operating systems the conventional way. Reportedly, the new macOS version won’t be macOS 16.

Codename ‘Tahoe’

It is said that it will be macOS 16 instead, with the ‘Tahoe’ codename. This is reportedly being done to make it easier to remember the latest software versions across different Apple product lineups. Now, let’s talk about what new features and changes we can expect with macOS Tahoe. While there is not much we know, there is still a good deal of information to share, discuss, and speculate upon.

Design Changes

The upcoming new macOS could feature a completely new design. This design could be inspired by how visionOS looks, which is available on Apple Vision Pro only, their virtual reality and augmented reality headset. With a design overhaul, expect to see brand-new icon styles, changed menu designs, and immersive looks.

The new macOS 26 Tahoe design may resemble iOS and iPadOS more closely. This will surely be an exciting change to experience. Shortly after Apple releases these new operating systems, a public beta becomes available as well, with which users can access the new software early on their devices.

Features and Apps

macOS 26 Tahoe may also introduce a dedicated gaming app. Apple is apparently getting serious about gaming this time around, with the new app supporting features like achievements, leaderboards, and more. It may even recommend games to you, serving as a curation service.

The new operating system may also bring Vehicle Motion Cues, an exciting accessibility feature that is designed to help with motion sickness. A magnifier app may also be released, with the ability to use your iPhone camera to magnify objects or small text that is hard to read.

macOS 26 Tahoe: Compatibility

The name macOS Tahoe is apparently inspired by Lake Tahoe. Speaking of compatibility, macOS 16 Tahoe is rumored to support MacBook Pro and Mac Pro models from 2019 and later. iMac models released in 2020 and later should be supported as well. Speaking of Mac Mini and MacBook Air, models with the M1 chip and later should be supported. All models of the Mac Studio are expected to get support for this latest software.
