Ancient Coins in Sea of Thieves are hard to obtain, and you only get a handful of them each season. The most efficient way might be to just purchase them using money. But there are various other ways you can also obtain them if you’re a free-to-play player. Here are some ways you can get Ancient Coins in Sea of Thieves to help you purchase ships and other cosmetics.

Ancient Coins are the premium currency in Sea of Thieves. This currency lets you purchase pets, their cosmetics, ships, and emotes. The easiest way to buy Ancient Coins is to buy them with money. But if you really want to role-play as a pirate and plunder the high seas, here are some ways you can acquire Ancient Coins in-game.

Pirate Emporium

The easiest way to purchase Ancient Coins is to not loot the Pirate Emporium but to purchase them with money. The Pirate Emporium is also the place where you can purchase various pets, ships, and cosmetics that help you add some flair to your pirate life. The Pirate Emporium is available on top of the Order of Souls locations, in the game’s outposts. You can also access the Pirate Emporium from the menu.

Ancient Skeletons

Skeletons are normal enemies that you will encounter throughout the game. Solving treasure maps and riddles and going on pirate journeys to plunder, these enemies will just pop up on islands and in caves, but there are a few rare variants of skeletons that you will encounter through your piracy.

The Ancient Skeletons, blue and gold, have on their back a sack of Ancient Coins that drops when you kill them. How do you know that an Ancient Skeleton is near you? An ominous soundtrack will start playing once you are near the location of an Ancient Skeleton. Veterans of the Sea of Thieves will know it, and you will too. After the track, you can also hear the falling of coins shortly after.

But these Skeletons will not fight you. Once spotted, they will start running while a soundtrack plays. If not killed in under 20 seconds, the Ancient Skeleton will bury itself, and your Ancient Coins will be lost. After you’ve defeated the Ancient Skeleton, you will receive a pop-up that you have received Ancient Coins, which range from 100 to 800 coins, as of the latest update. But these are pretty rare, and you might encounter one or two within a season, which lasts about 2 months.

Plunder Pass and Season Rewards

After acquiring these free Ancient Coins, you can buy the premium Plunder Pass, or do the free version of it. They cost 999 Ancient Coins, and you might have to wait a season or three to get the coins for free. However, this is the second easy way to get Ancient Coins.

These Coins are the premium currency, and the Coins do not affect gameplay in any manner, for now. So, there are very minimal ways of getting them for free. Additionally, you can also sign up for Microsoft Rewards. Although, they will take a bit of time to purchase anything valuable in Sea of Thieves.
