Bug-type Pokemon are often overlooked by a lot of trainers in Pokemon GO due to most of them being relatively weak. This type is also weak to Fire-types, one of the most commonly used Pokemon in the game. Needless to say, they aren’t the flashiest type in the Pokemon universe.

However, some Bug-type Pokemon can actually be viable with the proper investment. Considering how most trainers would underestimate a Bug-type, they can be good for catching opponents off guard. Whether you’re looking to dominate PvP content or melt through powerful raid bosses, these 8 Bug-type Pokémon are among the best to add to your lineup.

8 Best Bug-type Pokémon in Pokemon GO

1. Mega Heracross

  • Type: Bug and Fighting
  • Strengths: Massive Attack stat, dual-type coverage
  • Weakness: Flying, Fairy, Fire, and Psychic
  • Best Moveset: Counter and Megahorn

Mega Heracross is a powerhouse. With one of the highest Attack stats of any Bug-type in the game, it absolutely shreds through Psychic- and Dark-type raid bosses with Counter and Megahorn. Its Fighting subtyping also lets it take on Normal and Steel types, giving it excellent raid and PvP versatility.

2. Mega Pinsir

  • Type: Bug and Flying
  • Strengths: Pure Bug-type DPS monster
  • Weakness: Rock, Electric, Fire, Flying, and Ice
  • Best Moveset: Fury Cutter and X-Scissor

Mega Pinsir may be a glass cannon, but it delivers some of the best raw Bug-type damage in Pokémon GO. You can go for Fury Cutter and X-Scissor, which bring consistent DPS to any raid against Dark and Psychic-types. It’s fragile, so be strategic about when you deploy it, but if you want to burn down a boss fast, Mega Pinsir is up for the job.

3. Mega Scizor

  • Type: Bug and Steel
  • Strengths: Great typing, bulk, and raid potential
  • Weakness: Fire
  • Best Moveset: Fury Cutter and X-Scissor

Mega Scizor combines offense and durability, thanks to its fantastic Steel typing. It resists many common move types, giving it excellent staying power in raids. With Fury Cutter and X-Scissor, it offers strong Bug-type performance while staying on the field longer than most others. It’s also one of the few Megas that works well in PvP, too. Keep in mind that its only weakness is Fire, which is also one of the commonly used types in the game.

4. Volcarona

  • Type: Bug and Fire
  • Strengths: Powerful and unique typing, PvE/PvP flexibility
  • Weakness: Rock, Flying, and Water
  • Best Moveset: Bug Bite and Overheat

Volcarona is a rare Bug-type that also serves as a reliable Fire-type attacker. With that said, this Pokemon has wide type coverage and utility. With Bug Bite or Fury Cutter and Overheat, it burns through enemies while also checking Steel, Grass, and Psychic-types. It’s also one of the most stylish Bug-types, adding flair to its power.

5. Mega Beedrill

  • Type: Bug and Poison
  • Strengths: Fast damage output, low cost to power up
  • Weakness: Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Rock
  • Best Moveset: Poison Jab and Sludge Bomb

Mega Beedrill might not be as bulky or legendary as others, but it’s a budget-friendly raid beast. With Poison Jab and Sludge Bomb or X-Scissor, it does surprisingly high DPS and charges quickly. It’s especially useful in shorter raids or where you want to maximize damage in a short window before fainting.

6. Vikavolt

  • Type: Bug and Electric
  •  Strengths: Unique typing, accessible alternative for newer players
  • Weakness: Fire and Rock
  • Best Moveset: Bug Bite and Fly

Vikavolt might not top the DPS charts like some Mega or Shadow Bug-types, but it deserves a mention for its accessibility and niche utility. Its Bug/Electric typing gives it coverage against Water and Flying-types, which can be useful in certain raid matchups. With moves like Bug Bite and X-Scissor or Fly, it performs decently as a Bug-type attacker, and its charge moves make it viable in some PvP content.

It’s also one of the more stylish Bug-types and relatively easy to obtain thanks to Grubbin being a common spawn during certain events. For trainers building up their roster, Vikavolt is a solid mid-tier pick worth considering.

7. Shadow Escavalier

  • Type: Bug and Steel
  •  Strengths: High neutral damage, excellent moveset, anti-Fairy tech
  • Weakness: Fire
  • Best Moveset: Bug Bite and Razor Shell

Shadow Escavalier is an underrated Bug-type threat that brings solid power and versatility to both raids and PvP. Thanks to its Shadow boost, it deals heavy neutral damage with Counter (a rare and powerful Fast Move) and Megahorn, making it an aggressive Bug-type attacker. However, you can always go for the ‘ol reliable Bug Bite and Razor Shell. Its Steel typing also provides useful resistances, letting it survive longer than most Shadows in some matchups.

While Escavalier’s lack of a Flying or Fire resistance can be a downside, its ability to counter Psychic, Fairy, and even some Ice-types makes it a great flex pick in specialized scenarios.

8. Genesect

  • Type: Bug/Steel
  • Strengths: Mythical flexibility, diverse move pools
  • Weakness: Fire
  • Best Moveset: Metal Claw and Magnet Bomb

Genesect is one of the most unique Bug-type Pokémon in the game. With multiple Drives (Burn, Chill, Douse, Shock), it can adapt to different raid scenarios depending on the typing. Its Steel subtyping grants solid resistances, while Fury Cutter and X-Scissor keep its Bug-type identity intact. However, you can also go for Metal Claw and Magnet Bomb for a good DPS. It’s excellent in PvE, especially when type advantages align.
