Doom The Dark Ages might be a straightforward first-person arcade shooter. However, it still features plenty of elements that are usually associated with the action-adventure genre. For starters, you can unlock a host of different skins, not only for the weapons but also for the Slayer himself.

Some of these skins are tied to the optional Bethesda.net account, whereas others are obtained as an exclusive bonus for purchasing the Premium Edition. However, there are also skins that you can unlock simply by playing through the game. One such skin is the Nightmare costume for the Slayer. The Nightmare skin is arguably the most menacing-looking outfit available for the Slayer, and you can unlock it simply by playing the game.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Nightmare skin for the Slayer and how to unlock it in Doom The Dark Ages.

Requirements for the Nightmare Skin (Slayer) in Doom The Dark Ages

The Nightmare skin has received several changes for Doom The Dark Ages. In Doom Eternal, the Nightmare skin was received as a reward for completing a playthrough on the Nightmare difficulty. This means, unless you’re a veteran of the series, unlocking this skin for the Slayer would’ve taken you more than 40-50 hours. Unlocking the skin used to depend on factors like skill, weapon upgrades, etc.

However, in the case of Doom The Dark Ages, the Nightmare skin can be obtained by completing the campaign on any difficulty. You can unlock the skin even on Hurt Me Plenty and I’m Too Young To Die (Aspiring Slayer) presets. The only requirement is to finish the game in a save file.

You can essentially play the game at Ultra-Nightmare or Pandemonium to unlock the Conqueror or Reverant skins, alongside Nightmare. What makes getting the Nightmare skin even easier is the difficulty modifier. You can make the game more forgiving or challenging, regardless of your chosen difficulty preset. Using the difficulty modifier doesn’t impose any penalty on unlocks. And you can unlock all the skins (including Nightmare) even with difficulty modifiers enabled.

In addition to the Slayer cosmetic, you can also unlock Nightmare skins for all of the weapons in Doom The Dark Ages. The Nightmare weapon skins are obtained as exploration rewards. Similar to Codex Pages and Collectibles (Toys), the weapon skins are scattered across different chapters of the game. You can use the Automap to track these skins and grab them while going through the missions. You can also replay chapters to pick up missing collectibles and weapon skins.
