FromSoftware’s newest game is a spin-off of their previous hit, Elden Ring. The new title, Elden Ring Nightreign, takes the souls-style combat and puts it into a rogue-like combat loop.

Naturally, players have drawn parallels with another rogue-like game—2020’s Hades. This article will further examine the major differences and similarities between Elden Ring Nightreign and Hades.

Elden Ring Nightreign vs Hades: Major Similarities

One of the biggest similarities between both games is the genre. Both of them belong to the rogue-like genre and thus, have the same gameplay loop. You go on expeditions (or runs), and every time you die, you lose your progress and start back from zero. It will take most players multiple loops to polish their skills and achieve victory.

Progression

Both games are very similar in this aspect. Being rogue-like means that most of your progress is reset upon defeat. However, most don’t mean all of it. Both games have some forms of currencies, which you retain even after death (Darkness and Murk).

You can spend this currency for more permanent upgrades, which persist between deaths.

Fast Paced Combat

Neither game is slow. Freezing up for even a second can lead the run to an end (hesitation is defeat after all). The fast and hard-hitting bosses of Elden Ring were already one of its main selling points. The spin-off further increases this pace by putting a timer for each run.

Hades is quite similar in this manner. Although the timer is fully optional, you can choose to challenge yourself further by adding timers to your run.

Build Variety

Hades has six possible weapons to choose between. You can then customize this build as you progress through your run. Meanwhile, Nightreign offers you a choice between eight possible characters. Each comes with their own unique skills and abilities.

The weapons in Hades have a completely different playing style from each other. As a result, equipping them makes you play like a different character. This gives you many choices in how you want to play both games.

The similarities between both games have already been discussed. However, there are a bunch of key differences which make both games very distinct from one another. Some of these are:

Multiplayer and Single-player

Nightreign puts a special focus on the multiplayer aspect. Meanwhile, Hades is a purely single-player game. Although Elden Ring Nightreign does have an option if you want to play solo, this mode will be much harder than normal.

Therefore, Hades provides a more single-player experience, whereas Nightreign is more tuned for multiplayer.

Hades has a more Greek-inspired setting, where the protagonist Zagreus tries to escape his father’s realm. The various Gods of Olympus lend him their aid in this mission.

Meanwhile, Nightreign is set in Limveld. You play as the Nightfarers, who aim to stop the various Nightlords, which have gained great power. Both games have a different overall objective, story, and theme. Hades is more light-hearted in its dialogue at times. Meanwhile, Nightreign has all the grim world-building you would expect from a FromSoftware title.

Open World vs Dungeon Crawling

Elden Ring Nightreign focuses on open-world exploration, where the circle gets smaller over time. This is a similar mechanic from many battle royale games. On the other hand, Hades is more about dungeon crawling.

You choose the next room to explore and get rewards upon clearing it. This makes the overall gameplay feel very different between the games.

Those were some major similarities and differences between Elden Ring Nightreign and Hades.
